I'm not even sure how to go about talking about that little pistol. The latter I can only describe in the words of the late Michael Clark Duncan: "It feels like having a third ♥♥♥♥". The two weapons I have to single out as simply causing me to laugh maniacally are the Mammoth and the Super Shotgun.
Rocket Launcher and Grenade Launcher are sufficiently different to warrant use for one over the other but still step on each other's toes a bit too much. I just used the lead hose that you get to get my brutal doom fix. I did not see much use of the shredders, but that was perhaps me. You for example stop using the shotgun when you acquire the auto shotgun. Much like the games in this field, it suffers that earlier guns get outclassed and replaced by later ones. For the most part I died maybe 1-2 times per later levels. I am unsure why I didn't just start on the hardest but fine. Difficulty wise I would need to test the hardest difficulty, I played on very hard. Then there is the meat of this game, the guns and the balance. Be it new guns like Plasma Gun or item like double jump. These are optional items that make the game easier and more fun. You collect these rare resources that are hidden in the levels and you use these to buy special items from the shop. I really don't expect a game to have the same thought into level design as Hexen or Blood did but this is still pretty good. Some levels are fantastic, and some are ok ish. The first I would say goes from ok to great.
This was like playing Brutal Doom, in which case I hardly cared but had a manic glee on my face as I obliterated my way through whatever I was supposed to shoot at.Īnyway what these games need to have is following: good level structure, good audiovisual feedback for guns and difficulty/balance.
I honestly still don't know what it is about after I finished it. You find secrets, you probably ignore whatever story is in this game. You traverse a map that is partly a small intuitive maze with keys and doors, pickups and kill everything that moves along the way. In this game you play levels that work much like any of the ones in this sub genre do. Where the hell were these games when I was a kid? Ah well. Part of me is surprised that these types of shooters have not just created a comeback, but spawned a whole sub genre for themselves. It's a satisfying 'boomer' shooter that delivers in most areas. Bottom line is that this is very simple thumbs up. Regardless I decided to plow through it few days ago and here I am. Last time I played it was fairly bare bones but still quite fun. I stopped tracking the years but this has been on my list for many.
